Fusion

Fusion offers dancers the powerful opportunity to musically fuse different dance styles. Members of all dance communities come together to share their unique musical/technical skills and create unexpected and memorable moments. In not strictly adhering to a single dance or basic pattern, fusion dancers directly study core principles of partner dancing (like frame and weight transfer), and how they protect the community’s safety and ability to communicate constructively. Fusion is filled with improvisation, playful negotiation, connection, and honest emotion.

Micro

Micro-fusion (“micro”) simplifies movements to their core connections. It requires immense body control, attentiveness, and presence. Micro dancers communicate through the most subtle of isolations and weight shifts. They fill space and take time between and within the music, and are emotionally focused and present. As such, micro music is often slower, danced late at night, and has a weight of emotional content. Micro techniques are also invaluable in amplifying the depth of connection in macro movements.

SoCal Fusion Community

While Argentine tango is known for passion, blues agency, and lindy hop joy, fusion and micro spaces seek comfort in vulnerability. Fusion in Southern California is strongly influenced by the swing-to-blues-to-fusion pipeline, however has always welcomed ballroom, argentine tango, latin, ballet, hip-hop, and other influences. The SoCal Fusion Community is part of an expansive, international community that is home to a culturally diverse set of dancers dedicated to expressing themselves in grounded, playful and emotionally cathartic experiences.

Fusion F.A.Q.

1 / How does one ask for a dance?

It is normal and expected for both leads and follows to appropriately gesture or verbally invite, accept, or decline dances. If a dance is declined for any (or no) reason, it should not be taken personally. Similarly, movements within the dance are an invitation and should not be forced; movements should feel uplifting and comfortable. Dance is a conversation; there is a negotiation between partners, albeit nonverbally.

2 / What do I do if I have a safety concern?

If you experience or witness something uncomfortable or inappropriate, please make immediate actions to adjust for comfort and safety. This may include exercising boundary-setting techniques taught in lessons (e.g., frame adjustments), setting boundaries verbally, or exiting the situation outright and contacting a host or safety coordinator. Safety coordinators are available throughout the event and are visible by lit bracelets. Everything in partner dance should be an invitation; this means that you are not required to do anything uncomfortable as a lead or follow.
